CBSN Denver: ‘Methane Air’ Helps Combat Climate Change By Targeting Leaks

A new research project called “Methane Air” will take flight shortly tracking methane emission leaks from sources like pipelines and other infrastructure involved in the oil and gas sector. Methane is a potent gas that scientists say plays a major contributing role in the greenhouse effect.

Methane Air can fly over Colorado and using infrared cameras detect major methane leaks. According to the researchers behind the project, finding these leaks is the first step and once found, “[w]e have the technologies available to cut methane emissions globally in half over the next 10 years. And if we do that, then we can slow down the rate of global warming by 30%.”
